Commonly known as the Tomar tribe, Kuntal are inhabitants of Mathura and Bharatpur district. In fact, the surname Tomar and Kuntal can be interchangeably used by the community members.
The Kuntals of Delhi also use titles like Kuntala and Kuntalaman as a matter of pride and prestige. In the history of Kuntala caste relates to jurardev Tomar and Sohan pal Dev. Sohanpal established many forts and renamed the famous tomargarh fortress to sonkh.

The origin of kuntalas
Another story of Kuntals relates to the son of Pandavas named Arjun. Kuntals are the lineage of Kunti who originally belonged to Bharatpur. Arjun was famously called kuntalya because of being the son of Kunti. The prestigious lineage of Pandavas hold a high status and respect in the areas of Delhi and Bharatpur. Many Kuntal caste members write Pandava as their surname.
Kuntal gotra, kuldevi and traditions
The Chandravanshi gotra has a strong history of warriorship and winning in Mahabharat. The sons of Pandavas later settled in different parts of India, especially in Mathura. They also built the famous Yog Maya temple who was the sister of Lord Krishna. It is believed that the Kuldevi (yogmaya) temple of Chandravanshis can fulfil any wishes desired.
Which Caste is Kuntal?
Kuntals are basically jats of Rajasthan who were earlier involved in warfare and rulership. They have Tomar as their gotra. The places of Agra and Mathura have a rich history of Kuntals. The fort of sonkh still signifies the valour and courage of the group.
The tomars and kuntala carry the same gotra and hence cannot be married. The Chandravanshi kshtriyas are the jats of Uttar Pradesh. Earlier known as Arjunyaan, kuntals have their existence ever since the time of royal dynasties and vedic period.
Most of the Kuntal caste members can be found in Agra and the rest in Bharatpur estate. Kuntals or Kuntey people or even mentioned in Mahabharat. They are known to be the birthed and adopted sons of Kunti. Eventually, the kuntey people were called Kuntals.
The rich history of kuntals keep them holding a higher status till date. The community members are distributed in different parts of northern India today and are involved in both service and businesses.
